Spotlight® on DB2 for LUW
Version 6.7.1
Release Notes
September 2009
This document describes the enhancements and resolved issues included in Spotlight on DB2 for LUW 6.7.1. It also lists known issues in the product, describes workarounds for these issues, and specifies up-to-date system requirements.
Spotlight on DB2 for LUW is a real-time monitoring solution from Quest Software. Designed to let DBAs keep watch on all critical DB2 components from a single interface, it features an accurate visual representation of the DB2 environment. From graphic overview screens, you can observe real-time activity across the Linux, Unix, and Windows databases in a DB2 instance. Various components show the changing status of connections, wait events, locking, memory, disk I/O, and performance bottlenecks. Alarms call attention to emerging problems based on thresholds you can specify. Drilldowns provide the information you need to diagnose these problems. You can use this information to quickly resolve performance issues as they occur.
Spotlight on DB2 for LUW 6.7.1 is a maintenance release containing primarily internal fixes and enhancements to the 6.7 release.
Performance enhancements - Performance enhancements in this release include faster times for retrieving sub-drilldown information.
Support for DB2 for LUW 9.7 - Spotlight provides tolerance-level support for DB2 for LUW 9.7.
New metrics to support DB2 for LUW 9.7 - This release includes the following metrics for DB2 for LUW 9.7:
On the Workload sub-drilldown in the Workload Management Analysis drilldown, new lifetime, execution-time, and queue-time statistics for coordinator activity.
In the Workload Management Analysis drilldown, a new Address column to identify the IP addresses for workload occurrences.
On the Details sub-drilldown on the Tablespace Analysis drilldown, a new Paths Dropped indicator to specify whether a tablespace resides in containers that no longer exist.
New Log Write Time per Transaction graph - This new visual on the Log Status sub-drilldown in the Database Analysis drilldown shows how much total commit time is spent writing information from the tablespace to the log. This graph replaces the Avg Log Space per Transaction graph on this sub-drilldown.
Diagnostic drilldown - This new drilldown retrieves event, diagnostic log, and notification messages for DB2 for LUW databases 9.5 and later. Because the volume of diagnostic information can be extensive, the drilldown lets you specify filters to extract the information you want to view. You can filter by internal or external messages, times ranges, facility type, or degree of impact.
FDCC compliancy - Spotlight has received FDCC (Federal Desktop Core Configuration) certification.
Monitoring fixes applied - This release includes fixes to improve monitoring performance, especially in database-partitioned environments. Refer to Resolved Issues and Enhancements in 6.5.1 for the list of customer issues resolved in this release.
Knowledge Xpert links in help updated - The help links to Knowledge Xpert have been updated to support Knowledge Xpert 10.1 or greater.
Latest release of the Spotlight on Unix plug-in - The newest version of the Spotlight on Unix plug-in is installed with Spotlight on DB2.
Improved performance for DB2 for LUW connections - Spotlight on DB2 takes advantage of new DB2 technology that allows the management of multiple instance attachments with little impact on performance.
Full support of DB2 for LUW 9.5 metrics - New statistics for OLAP functions, RUNSTATS activities, and workloads are available on the Database Analysis, Database Manager Summary, Client Applications Analysis, and Top SQL drilldowns.
Support for the latest release of Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 LUW - Spotlight on DB2 integrates with the new 3.0 release of Quest SQL Optimizer for DB2 LUW to help you tune poorly performing SQL.
Latest release of the Spotlight on Unix plug-in - The newest version of the Spotlight on Unix plug-in is now available.
Workload Management Analysis drilldown - This new drilldown provides a comprehensive look at DB2 Workload Management (WLM) information and statistics captured for your DB2 for LUW 9.5 database. The drilldown covers five major WLM areas -- service classes, workloads, work classes, work actions, activities, and threshold queues -- that you can explore through summary information and sub-drilldowns.
New Workload Activities sub-drilldown added to the Client Applications Analysis drilldown - This new sub-drilldown provides DB2 Workload Management statistics about workload activity for each application connection.
New option to monitor locks on all applications - The Client Application Analysis drilldown provides the option to collect lock information for all active applications in the database. Simply select Collect lock information for all applications on the Locking sub-drilldown.
New Toad Edition license - The Spotlight Toad Edition license is now available. This single-seat Spotlight license is offered in conjunction with a single-seat Toad for DB2 DBA license. It allows the user to open Spotlight sessions within Toad to monitor single-partition DB2 for LUW databases.
Enhancements for Spotlight on DB2 for LUW 6.0 include the following:
Improved performance - Startup for Spotlight on DB2 has been enhanced to be significantly faster than previous versions.
Tree views in drilldowns - Drilldowns for databases, tablespaces, and buffer pools now use a tree view to show information across database partitions. At the top level of the tree is an aggregate row with consolidated information. At the lower level of the tree are rows with information for each database partition. Lower level rows descend from the aggregate row, which can be expanded and collapsed.
Criteria tab in drilldowns - Drilldowns for databases, tablespaces, buffer pools, and client applications now include a Criteria tab. As you view drilldowns, you can filter them based on criteria specified in the Criteria tab. Filtering lets you narrow the scope of the list shown in a drilldown. You can use it to focus on objects with a certain level of activity, certain attributes, or a certain current state. For example, you might filter a drilldown to see databases with the greatest I/O, tablespaces with the most direct writes, buffer pools with the lowest hit ratio, or applications that are currently connected.
Delta changes for metrics - A number drilldown columns now show delta changes for statistics. The delta is the change to a value since the last refresh of the interface. Delta changes are used primarily for I/O-related statistics.
New functionality for Spotlight on DB2 for LUW 6.0 includes many new features that are designed for use with DB2 for LUW 9. These features appear in the interface when Spotlight is connected to a version 9 database. Most incorporate metrics that are specific to DB2 for LUW 9. The main features related to version 9 databases are as follows:
HADR panel - The new HADR panel on the instance home page shows status and configuration for databases involved in high availability disaster recovery management. The information includes HADR role (standard or primary), current state, sync mode, status, number of missed heartbeats, timeout duration, and log gap. The Missed Beats component lights up when heartbeats are missed.
Buffer Pool Analysis drilldown - The I/O Times sub drilldown has been added to the Buffer Pools Analysis drilldown. The new sub drilldown contains graphs that let you visually monitor average I/O times and buffer pool hit ratios for a certain buffer pool.
Client Applications Analysis drilldown - The Lock Chains sub drilldown has been added to the Lock Chains sub drilldown. The new sub drilldown provides details about an application's lock relationships with other applications. It shows which applications are holding locks that an application is waiting for, which applications are waiting for locks held by an application, and whether locks are held by indoubt transactions.
Database Analysis drilldown - The History, Reorgs, and Utilities sub drilldowns have been added to the Database Analysis drilldown. The History sub drilldown shows the command history for all partitions of a database. The Reorgs sub drilldown lets you monitor table reorganizations for a certain database. The reorganizations include those that are currently in progress as well as those that are paused, stopped, or completed. The Utilities sub-drilldown shows the status of running utilities for a database or partition. You can use it to monitor the status and progress of backup, load, rebalance, restore, RUNSTATS, crash recovery, and rollforward recovery operations.
Database Manager Drilldown - Contacts, Paths, and Registry sub drilldowns have been added to the Database Manager drilldown. The Contacts sub drilldown lists individual contacts and contact groups that receive email or pager notifications after a task completes. The Paths sub drilldown shows the database paths used for database manager files and directories. The Registry sub drilldown shows the current DB2 registry settings for all partitions of a certain database.
Tablespace Analysis drilldown - The I/O Times, Quiescers, and Ranges sub drilldowns have been added to the Tablespace Analysis drilldown. The I/O Times sub drilldown provides graphs that contains graphs that let you visually monitor average I/O times and buffer pool hit ratios for a certain tablespace. The Quiescers sub drilldown provides information about the quiescer activity currently in progress. The Reorg sub drilldown allows you to monitor table reorganizations for a database. The reorganizations include those that are currently in progress as well as those that are paused, stopped, or completed. The new Tablespace Partition Information pane in the Details sub drilldown shows information is for a tablespace as it exists on a certain database partition.

| Connection profiles |
After an upgrade to Spotlight on DB2 LUW 6.2 or later, connection profiles from previous
versions might no longer connect to their target databases. If you encounter this
issue, try saving the profiles. If they still do not connect to their target
databases, create new profiles using the Connection
Manager in version 6.2 or later of Spotlight on DB2 for LUW.
However, before creating new profiles, delete old profiles and their folders on the Spotlight client machine. (This requirement also applies when you delete connection profiles for which the DB2 Auto Monitor Nodes option is selected.) Profile folders have the same names as their connections. To determine the path to the Folders profile that contains them, check the Spotlight console Options window. The path is shown in the File locations pane. The window is opened by selecting View | Options | Spotlight Console. The default path to the Profiles folder is as follows: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Quest Software\Shared\Profiles |
N/A |
| Monitor switches | When monitoring DB2 for LUW 9 databases, the connection profile monitor switch options have no effect on monitor switches. The method of data collection on version 9 databases requires the user to alter the status of instance level monitor switches to collect the desired data. | N/A |
| Alarm Log |
The Alarm Log does not display alarms for connections to DB2 for LUW 9 databases under all circumstances. In order to display alarms for connection profiles for version 9 databases, you need to do one of the following:

Event monitors
|
THE DB2 UDB INSTANCE MAY CRASH AFTER A TRAP IN THE FUNCTION LOAD_DCS_APPLID_INFO. THIS HAPPENS MORE ON WINDOWS THAN ON OTHER PLATFORMS… The crash occurs when the Event Monitor is trying to access an application that has not fully initialized or is in the process of terminating. In either case, the application client’s SETI pointer is NULL. Fix: Version 8, FixPak 11 |

|
| Percent of Max component |
When Spotlight monitors a DB2 for LUW 8 database, the Percent of Max component shown on the Client Apps panel of the database and node home pages might show inconsistent percentage values. These inconsistencies occur because the maxappls database configuration parameter in DB2 for LUW 8 can be a system-controlled value. The default setting of Automatic for this parameter in DB2 means that DB2 dynamically assigns resources as needed to support new applications. It is recommended that you turn off the default alarm for the metric behind the Percent of Max component in Spotlight. See Viewing and editing metrics in the Spotlight Basics online help for details on disabling the capture of a specific metric or on disabling its thresholds that can generate alarms. |

| Circular loopback databases | Spotlight encounters issues when it monitors a DB2 for LUW database that is cataloged as a circular loopback in the database directory. | N/A |
If you have a previous version of the Spotlight on DB2 for LUW client installed
on your machine, you can choose to upgrade the
previous version to 6.7.1 or install version 6.7.1 in a different directory (the advanced option
in the client installation wizard). If you install in a different directory, you can
run the 6.7.1 version side by side with previous versions of Spotlight on DB2
for LUW or with other installations of
version 6.7.1. In addition, you can run Spotlight on Oracle and Spotlight on SQL
Server side by side with Spotlight on DB2 for LUW.
To install and run Spotlight on DB2 for LUW, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements. Refer to the Spotlight on DB2 for LUW Installation Guide for detailed system requirement information, including recommended DB2 maintenance levels.

Both agents run on any of these platforms:
| Operating System | • Microsoft Windows 2000, 2003 (32-bit), XP
(32-bit), Vista (32-bit) • Sun Solaris 7 or later • IBM AIX 4.3 or later • SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 and 9 for zLinux • SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 and 9 United Linux for Intel x86 • SuSE Linux (2.6 Kernel) on AMD64 (x86_64) • RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 3.0 and 4.0 zLinux (32-bit) • Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0 for Intel x86 • RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 4.0 (2.6 Kernel) on AMD64 (x86) Note: For Red Hat Linux, you must install the compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm compatibility library. You will find this package on the RedHat Advanced Server 3.0 installation CDs. Note: For Sun Solaris 7 servers, you must apply Sun Solaris 7 patch 106327. If this patch is not already applied, you can apply it as part of the agent installation and configuration process described in Spotlight on DB2 for LUW Installation Guide. |
To take advantage of links to Knowledge Xpert topics in Spotlight's What's This? help on the home pages, you must have Knowledge Xpert for DB2 10.1 or later installed. Additionally, you must uninstall any previous versions of Knowledge Xpert on your machine.
To install Spotlight on a Windows 2003 machine, the installer must be either a Standard user (belonging to the Power Users Group) or an Administrator.
To install the Toad for DB2 Agent or the Quest Central for DB2 Agent on a Windows machine, the installer must have administrative privileges on that machine.
Spotlight either calls DB2 snapshot APIs (for DB2 for LUW 8) or invokes IBM table functions (for DB2 for LUW 9.1 or later) to collect the raw processing data that it then translates into meaningful performance information. To run Spotlight, you need any one of the following authorities on each DB2 instance you are monitoring:
or
or
or
Note: Spotlight on DB2 installation does not create any database objects. Therefore, aside from the required user authority, Spotlight does not grant or require any additional privileges on objects.
Additionally, to monitor a DB2 for LUW 9.5 or later database, Spotlight requires that the user ID connected to the database must have EXECUTE privilege on the following table functions:
WLM_GET_ACTIVITY_DETAILS
WLM_GET_QUEUE_STATS
WLM_GET_SERVICE_CLASS_AGENTS
WLM_GET_SERVICE_CLASS_WORKLOAD_OCCURRENCES
WLM_GET_SERVICE_SUBCLASS_STATS

The Spotlight on DB2 for LUW 6.7.1 release package contains the following products:
Spotlight on DB2 for LUW 6.7.1 has its own installation executable. This is available on the Spotlight installation CD or can be downloaded from either http://www.quest.com/spotlight-on-db2/ or http://support.quest.com (SupportLink). For additional information, refer to the Spotlight on DB2 for LUW Installation Guide, also available on SupportLink. The guide includes instructions for installing both the Spotlight client and the Quest Central for DB2 Agent. (Instructions for installing the Toad for DB2 Agent are found in the Toad for DB2 LUW Agent Installation Guide.) The agent must be installed if you want to monitor SMS (system-managed space) tablespaces on DB2 for LUW 8 database servers.
After you install Spotlight on DB2 for LUW, you can run it as a standalone product, as a component of Quest Central for DB2, or as a component of Toad for DB2.
MSI installers are available on Spotlight for DB2. These installers can be run silently, and produce an installation that can be captured and re-used via automatic deployment techniques.
